I fotografi vengono spesso descritti come cacciatori o pescatori. Un fotografo completo sa essere entrambi, e sa riconoscere il momento giusto per scegliere l'uno o l'altro approccio nella street photography. Il lavoro di Phil Penman vive proprio in questo equilibrio: paesaggi urbani, istanti spontanei, ritratti rubati alla strada. Questo workshop vi guiderà a diventare fotografi più completi, capaci di leggere qualsiasi scena e di rispondervi con precisione.
Phil condividerà con voi il suo intero processo: come cerca i soggetti, come usa composizione e luce per valorizzarli, come trae il massimo da una scena. Vi guiderà poi nel suo metodo di editing, per imparare a scegliere — non solo a scattare.
Percorrerete insieme i luoghi iconici di Roma, nei posti che Phil ha scelto come suoi preferiti: vi mostrerà il suo modo di osservare la città e di lavorare al suo interno.
PROGRAMMA
Giorno 1
08:00 – 09:00 — Introduzione e distribuzione attrezzatura
Accoglienza dei partecipanti e presentazione delle fotocamere in prestito. Phil introdurrà le basi del funzionamento delle macchine fotografiche e alcuni consigli pratici per affrontare la giornata con maggiore consapevolezza. Lo staff del Leica Store sarà a disposizione per il supporto tecnico durante la preparazione.
09:00 – 12:00 — Sessione di scatto sul campo
Uscita fotografica guidata da Phil nel cuore della città. Un'occasione per osservare, imparare e mettere in pratica le tecniche di street photography, catturando momenti autentici e scene di vita quotidiana.
12:00 – 14:00 — Pausa pranzo
Tempo libero per pranzare e ricaricare le energie — un momento ideale anche per confrontarsi con gli altri partecipanti.
14:00 – 16:00 — Sessione di editing
Phil condivide il proprio flusso di lavoro, spiegando come selezionare e valutare gli scatti. I partecipanti lavoreranno sulle proprie immagini, imparando a scegliere con occhio critico. Anche in questa fase, lo staff del Leica Store sarà disponibile per il supporto tecnico.
A seguire (opzionale) — Drink / cena
Un momento conviviale per continuare a conoscersi e parlare di fotografia in un'atmosfera informale.

Seconda uscita fotografica guidata da Phil.

Attrezzatura: fotocamere Leica
A tutti i partecipanti verrà fornita, secondo disponibilità, una fotocamera Leica completa di obiettivo. Per l'intera durata del workshop, Leica Akademie Italia metterà a disposizione una Leica M o Q.
Attrezzatura richiesta
Si consiglia di portare un computer portatile per la revisione delle immagini, oltre a un taccuino o un tablet per prendere appunti. La fotocamera sarà fornita da Leica: non serve portare la propria, a meno che non si tratti già di una Leica.
Livello fotografico
È consigliata una conoscenza di base di tempi, diaframma e ISO.

Note: this Masterclass will be held in English.
Photographers are often described as hunters or fishermen. A complete photographer knows how to be both — and how to recognize the right moment to shift between the two approaches in street photography. Phil Penman's work lives in exactly that balance: urban landscapes, spontaneous moments, portraits stolen from the street. This workshop will help you become a more complete photographer, able to read any scene and respond to it with precision.
Phil will share his entire process with you: how he scouts subjects, how he uses composition and light to bring out their best, and how he draws the most out of a scene. He will then guide you through his editing process — teaching you not just to shoot, but to choose.
Together, you will walk through Rome's most iconic locations — the very places Phil has chosen as his own favourites — as he shows you how he sees the city, and how he works within it.
PROGRAMME
Day 1
08:00 – 09:00 — Introduction & equipment handover
Welcome and presentation of the loan cameras. Phil will introduce the basics of camera operation and share practical advice for approaching the day's shoot with confidence. Leica Store staff will be on hand for technical support during setup.
09:00 – 12:00 — Field shooting session
A photo walk guided by Phil through the heart of the city — an opportunity to observe, learn, and put street photography techniques into practice, capturing authentic moments and everyday scenes.
12:00 – 14:00 — Lunch break
Free time to eat and recharge — also a good moment to connect with the other participants.
14:00 – 16:00 — Editing session
Phil shares his own workflow, explaining how he selects and evaluates images. Participants will work on their own shots, learning to edit with a critical eye. Leica Store staff will again be available for technical support.
Optional — Drinks / dinner
An informal, convivial moment to keep getting to know each other and talk photography.
Day 2
09:00 – 12:00 — Field shooting session
A second photo walk guided by Phil.
12:00 – 14:00 — Lunch break
14:00 – 16:00 — Editing & review session
EXTRA INFORMATION
Equipment: Leica cameras
Subject to availability, all participants will be provided with a Leica camera and lens. For the entire duration of the workshop, Leica Akademie Italia will make a Leica M or Q available.
Equipment to bring
We recommend bringing a laptop for reviewing images, along with a notebook or tablet for taking notes. The camera will be provided by Leica, so there's no need to bring your own — unless it's already a Leica.
Photography level
A basic understanding of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO is recommended.
Accommodation
Travel to and from the course venue, meals, and accommodation are not included in the participation fee.
